Undo and redo

Reverse recent changes to the chart one at a time, and restore a change that was undone by mistake.

1 min readChecked 16 October 2026Open in the editor

The editor records each change to the chart as a step, whether the change is an addition, a deletion, a move, an arrangement or an edit in the side panel. It keeps the last 50 steps while the page is open, and continuous typing in one field counts as a single step. Most settings in the View menu, the zoom and the position of the tool rail are not part of the chart, so undo does not affect them.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Press Ctrl+Z, or click the undo button in the top bar, to reverse the last change.

  2. 2

Repeat the command to reverse earlier changes, one step at a time.

  3. 3

Press ⇧+Ctrl+Z, or click the redo button, to restore a change that was undone.

  4. 4

If a message such as “Mark was removed.” appears after a change, click Undo in the message to reverse that change.

Tip

On a phone, the undo and redo buttons are not shown. Deletions, hidden people, new groups and arrangements can still be reversed with Undo in the message that follows them.

Note

Undo cannot reverse Reset, the choice of another sample or the opening of a template, because each of these clears the history. The history is also lost when the page is closed or reloaded, although the chart itself remains saved in this browser while Auto-save is on.
