Save your work and keep a backup

Keep the chart saved in this browser while you work, and export copies that remain available if the browser’s data is cleared.

Genogram Builder stores the chart in the local storage of the browser and saves each change about half a second after it is made. The chart is not saved to an account or a server, so it is not available in another browser or on another device. The browser holds one chart at a time, and loading another chart replaces it.

Procedure

  1. 1

Make sure that Auto-save in the bottom strip is switched on. The status beside it states how long ago the chart was saved, for example “The chart was saved a moment ago.”

  2. 2

Return to the editor later in the same browser on the same device. The chart reopens with the message “Your edits were restored.”

  3. 3

To keep a backup of the data, click Export, and then select JSON project.

  4. 4

To keep a copy that can be opened without the editor, export a PDF or an SVG vector as well.

Note

The editor cannot open a JSON project file at present, so a backup in that format cannot yet be restored. Keep a PDF or SVG copy of any chart that matters.

When the saved chart is replaced or lost

Three actions replace the saved chart without asking for confirmation. Reset, which appears in the top bar once the chart has been changed, discards the edits and loads the sample family again. Choosing another sample family or opening a template also loads a different chart. After any of these actions, Undo cannot bring the earlier chart back.

The chart is also lost when the data of the browser is cleared, and a private window discards it when the window is closed. If Auto-save is switched off, the status reads “The changes are not saved.” In that case, the editor reopens with the version saved before Auto-save was switched off. Auto-save is switched on again whenever the editor is reopened.
