Add occupation, culture and other background

Record a person’s occupation, education, home, heritage, religion, social class and migration, and choose which of these details are written on the canvas.

The Life & background section of the side panel records the social context of each person. Empty fields are folded away, so only Occupation is visible until another field is opened or filled in. A detail recorded here is written on the canvas only if its row is selected on the What is written tab of the View menu. A detail can therefore be kept in the record without appearing on the chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Click the person, and scroll the side panel to Life & background.

  2. 2

Type the person’s job in Occupation.

  3. 3

Click the button at the foot of the section that counts the empty fields, such as 9 more fields. The remaining fields, from Education to Migration, appear.

  4. 4

In Heritage, type each heritage, and press ↵ Enter or type a comma after it.

  5. 5

Under Migration, select Immigrant or Lived in other cultures. Immigrant draws two wavy lines above the symbol, and Lived in other cultures draws one.

  6. 6

Under Notes, type any further detail, or click Add a field to record a labelled detail of your own.

  7. 7

In the View menu, select the What is written tab, and then select the rows to write under each name.

Tip

When a religion other than None is selected, a Practice row appears with the choices Practising, Not and Unknown.

How background details appear on the canvas

Background details are written under the name in up to four lines, and any further lines are summarised by a count such as “+2 more”. A religion, an education level or a social class chosen from its list is drawn as a small mark under the name, whereas a value typed in by hand is written out in words. The wavy lines for migration are drawn while Identity & culture is selected on the What is drawn tab of the View menu.
