Review a draft before adding it

Before a draft is added, the side panel lists the items that need your attention. You keep, edit or remove each of them, and then add the draft to the chart or discard it.

4 min readChecked 16 October 2026

The review is organised by exception. Items that are stated in your notes are ready and are added without further action, while items that need a closer look are numbered and listed under Needs a look. The same numbers appear beside the people concerned on the canvas and in the margin of the notes, so that each item can be found in all three places.

The assistant may also ask a question when a sentence can be read in more than one way, for example when it is unclear to whom a pronoun refers. The items that depend on such a question are left out of the draft while the question is open.

Procedure

  1. 1

Read the summary at the top of the side panel, which gives the number of items stated in your notes and the number that need a look.

  2. 2

If any items need a look, click Review at the foot of the panel to open the first numbered card under Needs a look.

  3. 3

Read the reason and the quotation on the card, and then click Keep, Edit or Remove. The next card opens.

  4. 4

Answer each question under Questions by clicking one of the options, or click Skip to accept the reading that the draft used.

  5. 5

If the summary reports sentences that were not drawn, click Show beside that line to underline them in the notes.

  6. 6

When every card has been decided, click the button at the foot of the panel, which reads, for example, Add 14 to genogram. To abandon the draft instead, click Discard.

Tip

While some cards are still undecided, you can add only the items that are stated in your notes. Click the button at the foot of the panel that reads, for example, Add 11 ready only, and every flagged item is left out, including any that you have kept.

Note

The items that depend on a question are added only if you select the answer that matches the reading used in the draft, or Skip. With any other answer those items are left out, and their details must be entered by hand after the draft has been added.

Why a card needs a look

LabelMeaning
Not in your notesThe quotation on which the item relies could not be found in your notes.
Changes the chartThe item changes or removes something that is already on the genogram.
UnsureThe assistant marked its confidence in the item as low.
AssumedThe editor derived the item from another part of the draft, and the card gives the reason.
InferredThe assistant concluded something that the notes do not state in so many words, and the card states the inference.
SensitiveThe item records a sensitive fact about real people, so its quotation should be checked. Items are not flagged as sensitive when the text is a Course case.

Reading the draft

The notes sheet at the left shows how the draft was made. Each sentence that the draft used is underlined, and a sentence behind a flagged item also carries that item’s number in the margin. When you hover over an underlined sentence, its card in the side panel and its place on the canvas are highlighted.

The summary may contain further information. A line that begins with “This draft includes” names the sensitive topics in the draft, such as substance use or deaths, and gives the number of each. If the assistant took the sex of some people from their first names, the switch Sex from first names appears, and switching it off draws those people with the symbol for unknown sex. At the end of the panel, the list that begins with All shows every item in the draft.

After the draft is added

The whole draft is added as a single change. A message on the canvas states how many items were added and offers Undo for ten seconds. The side panel also offers Show changes, which highlights the people affected by the draft, and Undo this draft, which removes the entire draft.

Under What to check next, the panel suggests follow-up questions about the chart. Clicking a suggestion places it in the Assistant box, and nothing is sent until you press ↵ Enter.
