Link two people as family
The Connect tool joins two people who are already on the canvas as partners, as parent and child, or as siblings. It is used when relatives were drawn separately and the link between them is missing.
Procedure

Press C, or click Connect on the tool rail.

Click the first person, and then click the second person. A card opens on the Family tab.

If the two people are partners, select the status in Partnership status, and click Partners.

If one person is a parent of the other, select the type in Parent type, and click the option that states the relationship, such as “Helen is a parent of Ellie”.

If the two people are siblings, click Siblings.
The Family link to… button, to the right of Child on the ring, starts the same procedure from the person under the pointer, so that only the second person has to be clicked. Press Esc to cancel the link at any point before an option is clicked.
What each option does
| Option | Result |
|---|---|
| Partners | A couple line is drawn with the status selected in Partnership status. If the two people are already partners, the status of their couple line is changed instead. |
| “… is a parent of …” | A child line is drawn from the first person to the second, with the type selected in Parent type. If that line already exists, only its type is changed. |
| “… is a child of …” | A child line is drawn from the second person to the first, with the type selected in Parent type. If that line already exists, only its type is changed. |
| Siblings | The first person is given the same parents as the second. If the second person has no parents on the chart, the two are joined by a dashed sibling line instead. |
The suggested option
The card highlights the option that matches the positions of the two people on the canvas. Two people on the same row are offered Partners, and a person on a higher row is offered as the parent of a person below. The suggestion is only a starting point, and any option can be chosen instead.
