Show, move and adjust the key
Genogram Builder draws a key beside the family on the canvas. This article explains how to show or hide the key, move it, change its layout and edit its entries.
The key is a figure legend that the editor builds from the chart itself. It lists only the symbols and lines that the chart contains, grouped under headings such as People and Emotional relationships, and it is updated whenever the chart changes. A title block above the entries gives the name of the family, the date and the number of people.
The key is shown by default. Renamed entries, hidden entries and the definitions added by Explain are saved with the chart, and every PNG, SVG and PDF export reproduces these changes.
Procedure
- 1
Click Key in the top bar to show or hide the key on the canvas.
- 2
Drag the key by its title block to move it to another part of the canvas.
- 3
Click Auto, Strip or Column to set the layout. Strip places the key under the family, Column places it beside the family, and Auto chooses according to the shape of the family.
- 4
Click Explain to add a short definition to every entry. Click it again to remove the definitions.
- 5
To rename an entry, hover over it, click the options button at its right and select Rename…, and then type the new name and press ↵ Enter.
- 6
To remove an entry from the key and from exports, select Hide from the key in the same menu.
- 7
Click Show all at the foot of the key to restore every hidden entry.
When an entry has been renamed, its menu also contains Use the standard name, which restores the wording of the notation. On a narrow screen, where the top bar has no Key button, click More on the tool rail, select View and use the Key on the canvas switch.
The key is included in every PNG, SVG and PDF export, even when it is hidden on the canvas. To keep an entry out of an export, hide that entry from the key.
