Add a person

Place a person who is not yet related to anyone on the chart, and then link that person to the rest of the family.

The Person tool adds a single person who is not connected to anyone else. Each new person is named “New person” and is drawn with the diamond that stands for an unknown sex until the details are filled in. A relative of someone already on the canvas is better added from the ring around that person, because the ring places the new relative and draws the family line in one action.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Click Person (A) on the tool rail.

  2. 2

Click the canvas where the person should appear. The tool returns to Select, and the side panel opens with the name selected.

  3. 3

Type the person’s name, and press ↵ Enter.

  4. 4

Under Basics, select Male, Female, Non-binary or Unknown.

  5. 5

Link the person to the family with Connect (C), as described in Link two people as family.

Tip

The ring appears when you point to a person while Select is active. Its Parents, Partner, Child and Sibling buttons add a relative who is already linked to that person.
