The What is written tab controls the text around every symbol in the chart. By default the editor follows the book, writing the age inside the symbol and the birth year above it, with the name and the selected details below.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Click View in the top bar, and then click the What is written tab.

  2. 2

Select the rows that should appear, such as Occupation, Religion or Medical.

  3. 3

In the Age list, select Inside the symbol, Under the name or Hidden.

  4. 4

Under Text size, click S, M, L or XL. Under Typeface, choose a face, and use Bold and Italic beside Names and Detail lines.

  5. 5

To change the order of the lines, drag a row by its handle. With the handle focused, the up and down arrow keys move the row as well.

  6. 6

Under Medical, switch on One condition per line, or type a text such as No health conditions for people with none recorded.

  7. 7

Switch on Wrap long text or Years above symbol where they are needed.

Tip

To hide a row for some people only, select two or more people and click the eye beside that row in the Layers list of the side panel.

Long lines and many details

A line under a name is cut at the width of the symbol unless Wrap long text is switched on. At most four lines are written under a name, and any further lines are replaced by a count of the lines not shown. Recognised religions, levels of education and social classes are drawn as small marks, and other values are written out in words.

Settings that reach exported files

Exported files follow only part of this tab. Text size and the rows for Occupation, Location, Birth place and Custom fields are carried into PNG, SVG and PDF files. Names, ages and birth years are always written where the book places them, and recorded conditions are always named under the symbol. The rows for Education, Heritage, Religion, Class, Income and Notes are not written in exports.
