Add a child

You can add a son or daughter below a parent or a couple, and record the child’s sex and year of birth in the side panel.

Children are drawn on the row below their parents, and each child is joined to the couple line by a child line. McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry (2020) place children in order of birth, with the oldest on the left and the youngest on the right. The editor places each new child to the right of the parent’s existing children, so children added from the oldest to the youngest follow this convention.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Hover over one of the parents to show the ring.

  2. 2

Click Child at the bottom of the ring. The child appears on the row below, and the side panel opens with the placeholder name selected.

  3. 3

    Type the child’s name.

  4. 4

Select the child’s sex under Basics. A new child’s sex is recorded as unknown until it is set.

  5. 5

Type the year of birth in Born.

  6. 6

Repeat these steps for each further child, beginning with the oldest. Each new child is placed to the right of the last.

Tip

The same command is available as Add child in the card that opens when a couple line is clicked, and as Add a child under Family in the side panel.

Note

A child added from the ring joins the most recent partnership of the person under the pointer. A child added with Add child on a couple line joins the most recent partnership of the first partner named in the card, which may be a later partnership than the one selected. For a child of an earlier partnership, therefore, start from the parent who has no later partner.

Child lines

A new child is recorded as the biological child of both partners, and the child line descends from the middle of their couple line. If the parent has no partner on the chart, the child is linked to that parent alone. The type of a child line can be changed afterwards, as described in Show adoption or fostering.
