Change the chart by typing a sentence

A change to the chart can be described in a single sentence to the Assistant, for example “Paul and Helen separated in 2023”. The result is shown on the chart, where you keep it or undo it.

The Assistant interprets a short instruction in the same way as notes, and it applies the result to the chart that is open. If the result consists of no more than five additions or updates, each of them stated in the sentence, it appears on the canvas at once with the buttons Keep and Undo. Any other result opens the side panel, where it is reviewed in the same way as a draft from notes.

The Assistant changes an existing chart. If the chart contains no people, the notes sheet opens instead, so that the family can first be drafted from notes.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Press I, or click Assistant on the tool rail. A text box opens near the bottom of the canvas.

  2. 2

If the change concerns particular people, select them on the canvas first. The box then shows About, followed by their names.

  3. 3

Type the change in the box, for example “Jack is close to Joan”.

  4. 4

Press ↵ Enter to send the instruction.

  5. 5

If the change appears on the canvas with Keep and Undo, press ↵ Enter to keep it or Esc to undo it.

  6. 6

If the side panel opens instead, review the change as described in Review a draft before adding it.

Tip

If a long text is pasted into the box, it is moved into the notes sheet so that it can be drafted in full. This applies to a text of more than 60 words or one that contains line breaks. The From notes button at the left of the box also opens the notes sheet.

Note

The sentence is sent to the AI model together with the names, years and relationships of the people on the chart. For details, see What happens to your notes.
