Take the Draw tour
Watch the drawing tools demonstrated on the editor itself in six short chapters, without any change to your own chart.
The Draw tour is a guided demonstration of the drawing tools, divided into six chapters that last about two minutes in all. It runs on a copy of the Hawkins sample family. Your own chart is set aside while the tour plays and is restored unchanged when it ends, and in the meantime the save status states that nothing is being saved.
The tour can be started from the Tour button beside Draw and Describe in the top bar, or from Tutorial on the tool rail. On a first visit, the homepage also offers it once in a short invitation above the canvas. Not now declines the invitation for good, and the Tour button remains available.
Procedure
- 1
Click Tour in the top bar, or click Watch the tour in the invitation above the canvas. The first chapter begins on a copy of the Hawkins family.
- 2
Press Space to pause the tour, and press it again to continue.
- 3
Click the arrows or a segment of the progress bar to move to another chapter.
- 4
Click Exit, or press Esc, to leave the tour before it ends.
- 5
Click Start drawing when the tour ends to return to your own chart.
The tour is also offered as Tour the drawing tools at the end of the homepage film.
The six chapters
| Chapter | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Add relatives from the ring | The ring adds a child and a partner to a person who is already on the canvas. |
| Fill in a person | A year of birth, an occupation and a health condition are entered in the side panel. |
| Draw relationships | Two people are joined by an emotional relationship, and the type of an existing line is then changed. |
| Circle a household | The lasso draws a household, with its kind and colour chosen before the loop is drawn. |
| Notes and the key | A sticky note is written on the canvas, and the key explains one of its entries. |
| Tidy, check and export | The layout is rearranged with Arrange, a layer is switched off and on in the View menu, and the Export formats are shown. |
The homepage film
The homepage opens in Draw. The first time that you switch to Describe in this browser, a short film of Describe plays at once and lasts less than a minute. It types a set of course notes, drafts a genogram from them, and adds the reviewed draft to the canvas. On later visits, and whenever the notes already contain text or the device is set to reduce motion, the bar offers the film instead of playing it.
When the film ends, it offers Start with my notes, Tour the drawing tools and Watch again. The film can also be played at any time from Watch a genogram drafted from notes in the help window.
Using the editor during a demonstration
A demonstration never takes the editor away from you, and your own chart is kept separately until it ends. With the editor focused, Space or K pauses and resumes the demonstration, as in a video player, and Esc first closes a menu or window that you opened and otherwise ends the demonstration. In the tour, the arrow keys move between chapters when the tour’s bar has focus. Keys pressed while the page itself has focus, the Tab key and the browser’s own shortcuts work as usual.
Choosing another context ends the demonstration at once. If you switch between Draw and Describe, choose another sample family or click Export, your own chart and settings are restored first, and your choice then applies to them.
Any other action inside the editor pauses the demonstration. A click or a tap is then carried out on the sample, because it names what it acts on. The first key that you press is held back, because at that moment the selection belongs to the demonstration, and later keys act on the sample. Typing into the notes during the film is not inserted, because the notes hold the film’s example, and the bar offers Write my own notes instead.
While the demonstration is paused, the bar offers Resume, Restart and Skip or Exit. If you changed the sample in the meantime, Resume first returns the sample to the point at which the demonstration paused. In the tour, Restart chapter plays the current chapter again. A demonstration also pauses when the editor is scrolled out of view or the browser tab is hidden, and it continues when you return.
