Add a partner

Add a husband, wife or other partner beside a person, and record the status and the dates of the relationship on the couple line that joins them.

In the notation of McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry (2020), two partners are joined by a couple line that descends from each partner and runs across beneath them. By convention the man is drawn on the left and the woman on the right. A solid line records a marriage, and the other statuses change the line or add marks to it, as described in Show a marriage, separation or divorce.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Hover over the person, or click the person, to show the ring of buttons around the symbol.

  2. 2

Click Partner on the right of the ring. The new partner appears beside the person, and the side panel opens with the placeholder name selected.

  3. 3

Type the partner’s name, which replaces the placeholder.

  4. 4

If the editor has assigned the wrong sex, select the correct option under Basics.

  5. 5

Click the couple line between the two partners. A card opens with both names in its heading.

  6. 6

Select the status in Relationship, and type the years in From and Until.

Tip

A later partner is added in the same way, from the same person. The procedure for a second partnership and its children is described in Show a remarriage or step-family.

How the new partner is added

A new partner is given the opposite sex to the person from whom the partner was added, and the relationship begins with the status Married. If that person’s sex is recorded as non-binary or unknown, the partner’s sex is recorded as unknown. A male partner is placed to the left of the person and any other partner to the right, in keeping with the convention described above.

The side panel offers the same command. Select the person, and click Add a partner under Family in the side panel.
