Lay out three generations
Lay out a genogram to the conventions of McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry (2020), with one row for each generation and the siblings in each family in order of age.
A genogram drawn to the conventions of McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry (2020) shows at least three generations. These are the grandparents, the parents, and the index person with any brothers and sisters. The oldest generation is placed at the top, and all members of a generation share one row. Siblings are ordered by age, from the oldest on the left to the youngest on the right.
Each couple is drawn side by side. When a partner or a pair of parents is added, the editor places the man on the left and the woman on the right, following the usual reading order. As in the book, the birth year is written above each symbol and the age inside it, and the editor uses these positions by default.
Two further elements complete the page. The index person, for whom the genogram is drawn, is marked with a double outline, as explained in Mark the index person. The key should also be shown beside the chart, so that a reader can identify every symbol.
Procedure
- 1
Add the index person, and then click Sibling on the ring around that person to add each brother and sister.
- 2
Click Parents on the ring of the index person to add the generation above.
- 3
Click Parents on the ring of each parent to add both sets of grandparents.
- 4
Click Partner and Child on the ring of the index person to add a partner and any children.
- 5
Click Arrange, click More options, and switch on Siblings in birth order.
- 6
Click the button at the foot of the dialog to apply Tidy. Each set of siblings is reseated from the oldest on the left.
The order of siblings is taken from their birth years. Siblings without a birth year are placed after those who have one, in the order in which they were added.
