Draft a genogram from notes

A genogram can be drafted from written notes, such as intake notes or a case vignette. The assistant prepares a draft, which you review before anything is added to the chart.

Drafting from notes is an alternative to drawing the family by hand. You paste or type a description of the family, and an AI model identifies the people, their relationships and the facts recorded about them. Each item in the draft is linked to the sentence from which it was taken, so that it can be checked against the notes.

The kind of text that you select affects the review. When the text concerns real people, whether your own family or a client, sensitive facts such as substance use, abuse or self-harm are flagged for you to check. For a Course case, these facts are not flagged.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Click Describe in the top bar. The notes sheet opens at the left of the canvas.

  2. 2

Under This text is, click Course case, My own family or Client notes.

  3. 3

If a chart is already open, click Add to this genogram or Start a new genogram.

  4. 4

Paste or type the notes into the sheet.

  5. 5

Click Draft genogram, or press Ctrl+↵ Enter. The side panel at the right lists the people as they are found.

  6. 6

Wait while the family is drawn on the canvas. The draft appears inside a frame whose label states that it has not been added.

  7. 7

Review the draft and add it to the chart, as described in Review a draft before adding it.

Tip

To watch a complete draft before you use your own notes, click Try the example while the sheet is empty. The button then changes to Watch the example, which replays a recorded draft of a fictional course case and sends nothing to the AI model.

Note

The text that you draft from is sent to an AI model. If the notes concern real people, replace their names with initials or pseudonyms, and read What happens to your notes first.

While the draft is prepared

During drafting, the side panel shows the stages of the work, the people found so far, the time elapsed and the usual duration for notes of that length. If you click Stop and keep N people, where N is the number of people found so far, drafting ends, and the items received up to that point are kept for review in the usual way. If the AI service cannot be reached, the panel reports the problem, and neither the notes nor the chart is changed.

If you selected Start a new genogram, the open chart is replaced only when the draft is added. Undo then restores the previous chart.
