Open a sample family or template

Open a finished family to study how a genogram is drawn, or to practise on it before you draw a family of your own.

The editor includes a collection of example families, which are offered both in the sample list beside the family name and on the Templates page of the website. The two places list the same families. The editor opens with the Hawkins family, a three-generation clinical case, and the Hale–Okafor family contains every symbol of the notation, so it is a convenient reference.

The Templates page describes each family and can be filtered by Category and Difficulty. On a phone, the sample list is not shown, so families are opened from the Templates page instead.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Click the sample list beside the family name at the top left of the editor.

  2. 2

Select a family. It replaces the chart on the canvas at once.

  3. 3

If you would rather read a description of each family first, click Templates in the header of the website, and filter the page by Category or Difficulty.

  4. 4

Click Open in editor on a template to load that family into the editor.

Tip

A template with an Intake notes button also includes a written case description. Click Intake notes, and then click Copy. The copied description can be pasted into Describe to practise drafting a genogram from notes.

Note

Opening a sample or a template replaces the chart saved in this browser, and Undo cannot bring the previous chart back. If you need to keep the current chart, export it as a JSON project first.
