Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Click View in the top bar.

  2. 2

If the What is written tab is showing, click What is drawn.

  3. 3

Select or clear Medical, Relationships, Identity & culture, Couple dates and Groups. The canvas changes as soon as a box is selected or cleared.

  4. 4

If Medical is selected, select a colour scheme under Shading.

  5. 5

If anything has been hidden, click Show all beside Hidden people, Hidden lines or Hidden groups.

  6. 6

Under Fill people by, choose a field such as Generation, Heritage or one of your own. Click the colour beside a value to change it. The key lists each colour.

  7. 7

Under Canvas, click a Background colour, and switch Dots off for a plain canvas. Exported images use the same background.

The layers

LayerWhat it controls
MedicalSymbols are shaded for their recorded conditions. This layer must also be on for the names of conditions to appear under the symbols.
RelationshipsThis layer draws the coloured lines for emotional relationships, such as close, distant and hostile.
Identity & cultureMarks for transgender identity, sexual orientation, secrets and migration are drawn on and around the symbols.
Couple datesThe years of marriage and divorce are written on each couple line.
GroupsOutlines are drawn around households, temporary arrangements and highlights.
Clinical modeEach name is replaced by a number, as described in Replace names with numbers in Clinical mode.

Medical shading

When Medical is selected, Shading offers two colour schemes. The first draws every condition in red, as McGoldrick, Gerson and Petry (2020) do. By condition gives each condition its own colour and lists the colours in the key.

Settings at the foot of the panel

Three settings at the foot of the panel apply to both tabs. Key on the canvas shows or hides the key, as the Key button in the top bar does. Toolbar places the tool rail on the Left, the Bottom or the Top of the canvas, and Snap to grid aligns people with their rows while they are dragged.

Layers and exported files

Most switches on this tab change the canvas only. An exported file contains the medical shading, the relationship lines, the identity marks and the groups even when they are switched off here, and it never contains couple dates. Exports do follow the choice of shading and Clinical mode, and they leave out any person, line or group that has been hidden individually. Open the exported file to confirm what it contains before you submit it.
