Edit a person’s name, sex and years

Change a person’s name, sex and year of birth in the side panel.

1 min readChecked 16 October 2026Open in the editor

The side panel presents a person’s record in the order in which a genogram interview usually gathers it. Basics holds the sex, the status and the years, and it is followed by Family, Health, Life & background and Notes. The panel has no save button, because every change is applied at once and can be reversed with undo. A person must always have a name, so if the name field is left empty, the previous name returns.

Demonstration in the editor
This demonstration runs in the editor on a copy of a sample family. It does not change your own chart.

Procedure

  1. 1

Click the person on the canvas. The side panel opens on the right.

  2. 2

Click the name at the top of the panel, and type the new name.

  3. 3

Under Basics, select Male, Female, Non-binary or Unknown. The symbol changes to a square, a circle, an arched shape or a diamond.

  4. 4

Type the year of birth in Born. The person’s age is written inside the symbol.

  5. 5

Click the close button at the top right of the panel, or press Esc.

Tip

Double-click a person to open the panel with the name ready for typing. Pressing ↵ Enter while a person is selected has the same effect.

Note

While Clinical is switched on in the bottom strip, the name cannot be edited, because people are shown as numbers in place of names.
