What is a genogram builder?

A genogram builder is a drawing tool for mapping family members, generations and relationships. The editor lets you enter names, dates and connections directly on an editable canvas, then export a diagram or a JSON project file.

A genogram adds relationship details to a family tree: who partnered, who separated, who belongs to a household, and how people relate emotionally. This online editor opens with a fictional example family and more than thirty templates, so you can learn the notation before entering personal information.

Background: GenoPro’s introduction to genograms

How do I make a genogram online?

Use the genogram builder in three steps. Start with a sample, edit the family, then export a copy. The buttons below take you straight to the relevant canvas control.

  1. 01

    Start with a person

Select someone in the example to edit their name, dates and notes. Hawkins contains 11 people across three generations; Hale–Okafor demonstrates more family structures. Replace the example details with information you know.

  2. 02

    Connect the family

Add relatives and choose partnership, parentage or emotional connections. The editor keeps lines attached when you move people. Arrange generations, label relationships and leave unknown details blank rather than guessing.

  3. 03

    Review and download

Move people apart, fit the whole family into view, and check every label. With a free account, export a PNG or PDF with a Genogram Builder watermark, or a JSON backup; Pro and Max export without the watermark and add SVG. Undo lets you revise a change before downloading.

What do the symbols mean?

The genogram builder includes 59 symbols and connections covering people, couples, children, emotional relationships, health markers and groups. Shapes identify people; different lines describe different relationships. A close bond, conflict and emotional cutoff should look distinct.

Open Key in the editor to inspect the notation used in your drawing. Hover an entry to highlight matching people and connections. Include the legend when sharing: readers should not have to guess what a line means.

Make room for the whole family story.

A useful genogram builder keeps details readable as your family diagram grows. Build the structure first, then add the information that matters for your purpose.

Relationships beyond a family tree

Use the genogram builder to distinguish marriage, separation, divorce and other partnerships. Parent–child links can record biological, adoptive and foster relationships. Add emotional lines separately, so family structure and personal interpretation remain distinguishable.

Household groups, background regions and notes give context without squeezing everything into a name label. The editor also supports life events and health tags; record only information you can verify and have permission to include.

A diagram you can keep refining

Search for a person, adjust labels and use arrangement controls when branches become crowded. The canvas lets you move individuals or work with a selection, while undo and redo make it easier to compare changes.

Full screen gives a large family more space. On a smaller screen, use Fit and zoom to inspect one branch at a time. Your drawing remains editable while you decide which details belong in the final export.

Genogram builder or family tree builder?

Choose by the question you want to answer. A family tree usually emphasizes ancestry. A genogram builder helps you document family structure alongside relationship context; a presentation diagram may be enough for a simple introduction.

Choose this genogram builder when you want an editable relationship map with a built-in key. For historical records, DNA analysis or shared research databases, choose a service designed for those tasks. The editor does not retrieve records or verify family claims.

How do I save and share my diagram?

With Auto-save enabled, the genogram builder stores edits in this browser and restores them when you return. Local storage is not a cloud backup: clearing browser data, changing devices or using a different browser can leave that saved copy unavailable.

With a free account, download a PNG or PDF for a document or slide and a JSON backup to keep the project editable. Pro and Max remove the watermark from PNG and PDF and add SVG for scalable artwork. Before sharing an export, check names, notes and health details. Share only the information your intended reader needs.

Save a JSON backup before moving between browsers or devices, and keep a separate copy for each audience. Review names, notes and health details before you share a chart. Ask relatives before including sensitive information about them.

Questions before you start?

Practical answers about the genogram builder, its examples and your files. Open Tutorial in the editor’s toolbar, or the Docs page, for every tool step by step.

Is this genogram builder free?

Yes. Draw and edit one genogram of up to 50 people without an account, and it stays in this browser. A free account adds two genograms with up to 50 people in each, all 34 templates, PNG and PDF export with a Genogram Builder watermark, JSON backup and five drafts from notes a month. Pro and Max add unlimited drafts, exports without the watermark and SVG.

Can I make a three-generation genogram?

Yes. The Hawkins example has 11 people across three generations. Edit that example or add more relatives, then use Fit and arrangement controls to review the whole family. All sample families are fictional.

What information do I need to begin?

Start with names or initials, the generations you want to include, and the relationships you know. Add dates and notes later. The editor can organize your information, but it cannot establish whether a relationship or recollection is accurate.

Does the genogram builder generate a family from a prompt?

Yes, as a draft you review. Switch the editor to Describe and type or paste notes; the assistant draws the people and relationships it finds, links each one to the sentence it came from, and flags anything it was unsure of. Nothing is added until you choose Add, and one click undoes it. A draft is only as accurate as the notes, so check it before you rely on it.

Will a refresh erase my work?

No, provided Auto-save is enabled and your browser has retained its saved data. The editor restores that local copy. Reset deliberately restores the selected sample, so download a JSON backup before resetting work you want to keep.

Can I use the genogram builder for an assignment?

Yes, for drawing and explaining family relationships. Check your instructor’s required notation, number of generations and file format. The editor provides drawing tools; it does not certify that your diagram meets a course rubric or professional standard.

Is the genogram builder a diagnostic tool?

No. This drawing tool is for general family diagrams, learning and personal reflection. Health markers record information you enter; they do not diagnose a condition, calculate inherited risk or establish why a relationship developed. Seek qualified advice for clinical interpretation.

How do I move people or use a keyboard?

Drag a person to move them, or drag empty space to pan. On touch, press and hold a person before dragging. Tab to a person and press Enter for details; arrow keys move them, / opens search, and 0 fits the drawing.

Every family has a pattern. Start by seeing one.

Open the genogram builder, explore a fictional family, and start adding your own connections. Keep the details you know, label uncertainty, and download a copy when you are ready.
